Step 1 – Pass Your Medical

You must first pass a medical examination to guarantee that you are fit to operate an HGV safely on public roads. After conducting your physical, a doctor will fill up an official DVLA form with important health information.

The questions the doctor asks will help them determine whether you have any diseases that could make it unsafe for you to drive, like neurological issues or sleep disorders. The DVLA will then decide whether or not to approve your start of HGV training.

Step 2 – Pass a Theory Test

Once the DVLA gives the all-clear, you may focus on studying for your theoretical exam. If you want to obtain an advantage, you can even do this before you’re given the all-clear to drive.

The theory exam consists of two parts: a multiple-choice portion on-road knowledge and a section on hazard perception that evaluates your understanding of possible threats.

Step 3 – Pass Your Practical

After completing your coursework, you will begin your practical training and gain the necessary skills to safely operate a heavy-duty truck.

You will only pick up the fundamental driving abilities needed to pass your practical test from an experienced and certified instructor who has “been there and done that” under their tutelage.

You will receive your HGV licence and become a newly certified driver upon passing your practical exam. This will allow you to start the last phase of your training and dive into the thrilling and fulfilling world of HGV driving.

Step 4 – Do your CPC training

Your first Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DPC), obtained via successful completion of the HGV training program, is the program’s capstone. It is mandatory for all HGV drivers to obtain their CPC before seeking professional driver positions.

There are two components for the CPC qualification: the practical demonstration test and the case study test. You will receive a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) upon passing; this card is good for five years, after which you will need to retake the driver CPC course.
