Professional drivers of buses, coaches, and trucks are required to hold a “Certificate of Professional Competence,” or CPC as it is commonly known. It is illegal to operate a truck, bus, or coach commercially if you do not hold a Driver CPC. You have to have a truck, bus, or coach if operating one is your main source of income.
To drive a truck, bus, or coach after the expiration of your five-year Driver CPC, you must renew it. Before the expiration of your current Driver CPC, you must complete 35 hours of training.Every five years, professional drivers of both buses and trucks only need to complete one set of training.

About Initial Driver CPC Training
New drivers who want to master this professional competence can enrol in the Initial Driver CPC Qualification course. The process for obtaining a licence and the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) are four distinct modules.
What is Included in Initial Driver CPC Training
A theoretical and hazard perception test is included in the first module. To proceed to Module 3, one must complete the theory-based case study test in Module 2. For classifications C1 and C+E, this is a practical LGV driving test. To be eligible for a licence, you must pass Modules 1 and 3. To obtain the Initial Driver CPC, Modules 2 and 4 must be completed.
Module 4 is a “demonstration test,” which is a practical evaluation of relevant knowledge in which the driver must show that they understand vehicle-related topics such as load limits, safety, and daily inspections.
Candidates won’t be granted the DQC, which gives them the legal right to drive LGVs professionally unless they have finished all four sessions. As an employer, it is your responsibility to make sure that your drivers are properly qualified and have a valid card.
About Driver CPC Periodic Training
After completing Initial Driver CPC Training, qualified professional LGV drivers are eligible for Driver CPC Periodic Training. Following initial training, each LGV driver needs to complete 35 hours of Driver CPC Training over five years to keep their Driver CPC Card.
If the requisite hours are not completed within the allotted five years, the driver’s right to drive professionally is suspended until the training is finished. As a result, any driver who continues to operate a vehicle after the deadline but has not yet completed the required 35 hours of periodic training is breaking the law.
What is Included in Driver CPC Periodic Training
Several facets of professional driving are covered in the Driver CPC Periodic Training. The DVSA and JAUPT must approve the training modules, which can be selected to correspond with the driver’s line of work to maintain current and renew pertinent abilities.
